Published: June 18, 2025, 09:18 AM IST Mumbai, India – TCS New Bench Policy – Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s top IT company, has launched a new rule starting right away. Now, every employee must work on billable projects for at least 225 days in a year. They can only sit on the bench—time without a project—for 35 days. If you don’t follow this, your salary or job growth might get affected. TCS says this is to make work more efficient, but many are worried about extra stress and job safety.

What’s the New Rule About?

Under this new policy, TCS wants employees to spend 225 days working on projects that earn money for the company. The remaining 35 days can be spent on the bench. If you don’t meet the 225-day target, your pay or career growth could take a hit, or you might even lose your job. This rule comes from Chandrasekaran Ramkumar, the head of TCS’s Resource Management Group (RMG), to make sure everyone stays busy and the company runs smoothly.

Why Is TCS Doing This?

TCS says this rule will help them save money and keep employees active on projects. They want to avoid wasting time when people are not working. During bench time, you have to spend 4 to 6 hours daily learning on platforms like iEvolve or LinkedIn to get ready for the next project fast. You also need to come to the office during this time, unless you have a big personal emergency (and even then, RMG has to say yes). Switching projects too often is not allowed, and HR might check if you’re not following the rules.

What Are Employees Saying?

Many TCS employees are not happy. They feel this 225-day rule will put a lot of pressure on them to find projects all the time. Some are scared they might lose their jobs if they can’t meet the target within 35 days on the bench. On X, people are sharing their worries, with some saying it could make work too stressful. Experts think this might also make it hard for managers to quickly find the right projects for everyone, which could lead to mistakes.

How Will This Affect the IT World?

Since TCS is a big name, other IT companies like Infosys and Wipro might follow this idea. On X, some think it’s a smart move because IT work is slowing down a bit due to global money issues. But others are worried it might make employees too tired. This rule shows TCS is trying to manage its team better in tough times.

What’s Next?

TCS hasn’t said exactly what will happen if you don’t follow the rule, but they want everyone to talk to RMG and learn new skills during bench time. As this rule starts, everyone will watch how it affects TCS employees and the whole IT industry in the coming months.
